How To Maintain Your Car Battery In 2022
There’s nothing worse than getting an unexpected flat battery when you’re about to head off on a trip. Although sometimes it can’t be helped, there are certain things you can do to maintain your car battery and lessen the chances of a surprise headache down the road.
At Mantello Kia Roxburgh Park, we love helping our customers make the most of their new or used vehicles. With just a little extra knowledge, your whole driving experience can be enhanced, and your car can keep going well into the future.
We all want to start off the year the right way, and it all begins with forming good habits. Typically, car batteries can last between three and five years. So, how can you maintain your car battery in 2022 and ensure it doesn’t conk out after one or two?
Test your voltage
To test your battery voltage, you can either take your car to a qualified mechanic or purchase an at-home testing kit called a voltmeter. These kits are easy to use – especially if you buy a digital voltmeter, which will provide an accurate reading for your car battery.
Just start by connecting the positive voltmeter lead to the positive terminal on your battery, and the negative to the negative. This should only be done once your car has been turned off for at least 12 hours. After connecting the leads, you’ll receive a reading, which should be between 12.4 and 12.8 volts if it’s fully charged. If it’s outside of these numbers, take your car for a service with a mechanic.
Run your engine
Part of good car maintenance is ensuring your car doesn’t go unused for days and days at a time. Taking your car out for at least a 30-minute drive each week will ensure the engine gets warmed up and the fluids are properly circulated.
Vehicle owners often run into problems when they leave their car unused while they’re away on holiday for weeks so, if you can, try to get someone to come and start up the engine for you and take it for a little spin. If this isn’t possible, make sure the battery is fully charged before you go away.
Get your car serviced
At Mantello Kia Roxburgh Park, we know that maintenance is too important to ignore. When you bring your car into our workshop, you can be sure that we use the most up-to-date equipment to give your Kia the love it needs.
When you take your car for a service, ask your mechanic to check that your battery is in good condition and will keep you on the road without an unexpected breakdown.
